John Savident is an English actor who played Fred Elliott from 1994 to 2006. Initially Fred was a recurring character but he was made regular in 1997, I say he was made a regular in 1997.

Pre Corrie career[edit | edit source]

Born 21 January 1938 in Guernsey, Channel Islands. His family came to England in 1940. John worked as a police officer before deciding to become an actor.

Corrie[edit | edit source]

John joined the cast of Coronation Street in 1994 as loud butcher Fred Elliott, his first episodes airing in August that year. Initially it was a guest role, and John did a few more short guest stints as Fred in 1995, these episodes airing in February, August, November and December of 1995, becoming a more regular cast member in 1996, then a full time cast member from 1997 onwards.

In late 2005, John decided to leave Coronation Street after 11 years. In December 2005 it was announced that he was leaving his role as Fred. John cited personal reasons, and he wanted to spend more time with his family. John also found the grind of the 5 episode a week schedule too much to bear. John filmed his last scenes in August/September 2006, airing on the 11th October that year where his character Fred dies suddenly of a fatal stroke.
