Kirk Sutherland is a character in Coronation Street who first appeared in May 2000. He is the older brother of Maria Connor. Kirk is played by Andrew Whyment.

Backstory[]
Kirk was born in 1982 to parents Eric and Dot Sutherland. He was dropped on the head as a baby, which may explain his nature in adulthood. His sister Maria was born the following year after his own birth.
2000-[]
An eighteen year old Kirk visited his sister Maria in May 2000, although she kept the meeting a secret and they were spotted from a distance by Maria's boyfriend Tyrone Dobbs, leading to him believing Kirk was a secret boyfriend. Maria later explained to Tyrone who Kirk actually was.
Later in the year Kirk met the residents of Coronation Street when attending a party. He later began visiting the street regularly, and later moved into Number 5 Coronation Street with Les Battersby, who became Kirk's best friend. They later got involved in a scheme to keep the council house in which Kirk pretended to be Les' boyfriend. When Les began going out with Cilla Battersby-Brown Kirk began dating Cilla's daughter Fiz Brown, and became a surrogate brother to her younger half-brother Chesney. However Kirk and Fiz split up after Fiz had an affair with his best friend Tyrone Dobbs, although they later reconciled.
After Les and Cilla went their separate ways and disappeared to lead their own lives, Kirk began to look after Chesney but struggled due to not having experience as a father. Fiz, who was again split up from Kirk, stepped in to become her brother's guardian. Kirk continued staying with them at Number 5, although struggled to find employment. He briefly worked with Ashley Peacock at the butchers, but later lost his job. He moved out of Number 5 in 2009 and in with Maria next door. In 2010, he found full-time employment as a delivery driver at Underworld.
In 2012, Kirk began to date Beth Tinker and became a surrogate father to her son Craig. Kirk and Beth dated in 2015, although in 2016 Kirk was heartbroken to learn that she was still married to Craig's absent father Darryl Parkins. Despite this betrayal Kirk decided to remain with Beth.
Background information[]
- In his debut episode in May 2000, Kirk appeared in a long-shot played by an uncredited extra. Andrew Whyment would debut in the role five months later, although his role was only sporadic as he appeared in 1 episode in 2000 and 22 episodes throughout 2001. He became a regular in 2002.
