Nita Desai was a character in Coronation Street from Ep 4539 - 8 Jan 1999 to Ep 4824 - 19 May 2000. She was the older sister of Vikram Desai and the daughter of Ravi Desai. She was also a cousin of Dev Alahan. Nita was played by Rebecca Sarker.
Biography
Backstory
Nita Desai was born on the 30th April 1975 to Ravi Desai and Mrs Desai. She had a brother Vikram Desai born in 1979. As Nita's father ran shops, Nita grew up in the retail business. Nita's mum died in 1995 when Nita was 20.
1999-2000
Nita Desai.
23 year old Nita arrived in Coronation Street on the 8th January 1999 as Fred Elliott's new assistant. She showed much interest in the Corner Shop, Coronation Street. Her father bought the shop a month later. Nita then got a job at Freshco's Supermarket, Weatherfield. She dated Steve McDonald which was met with chagrin by Ravi as he did not think he was right for her.
In November 1999 she and other Freshco staff such as Curly Watts, Fred Elliott, Alma Baldwin, Ken Barlow and Ashley Peacock went on a Freshco's vs Bettabuys competition in The Peak District. Curly was the leader but acted a bit of a dictator which annoyed Nita. Fred Elliott injured himself and had to be carried back to base, encouraged by Nita. Nita became interested in James Kitching the boss at Freshco's. He suggested that she applies for a job as a supervisor. They even end up sleeping together. in mid December 1999 Nita was interviewed but did not get the job and was angry at Kitching for leading her on. She then dumped him and never saw him again.
In May 2000, 25 year old Nita decided to leave Weatherfield to start a new job in Scotland. A farewell party was held for her in The Rovers. Nita then left for Scotland. Nita has not been seen or heard from in Weatherfield since.
After 2000
Nita's cousin Dev Alahan has lived in Weatherfield since 1999 but has not mentioned whether Nita has married and had any children since her departure in 2000.
As of 2020, Nita will be 45 years old. In June 2019, Nita's father Ravi was said to be ill. Dev was informed. However Ravi made a recovery.
