Sylvia Goodwin (Formerly Cropper, Nee Unknown) was a character in Coronation Street from 2011 to 2013 and the mother of Roy Cropper. Sylvie was played by Stephanie Cole.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Sylvia was born in October 1933. In about 1953 she met and married St. John Cropper and they had a son Roy Cropper in September 1954. Sylvie was 19 at the time. In 1964 when Roy was 10 his father left and later remarried and had 3 children from his 2nd marriage. Roy was a bit of a misfit at school.

2011-2013[]

In April 2011 Sylvia sent Roy a letter revealing her second husband Roger Goodwin had passed away. Roy decided not to attend as he felt it would bring back bad memories of his childhood. After the funeral Sylvia turned up at the cafe inquiring about Roy's "lack of support" and was also upset he didn't tell her he was now married.

Having been left financially ruined as Roger had left behind debts, Sylvia was forced to move into a home. A sympathetic Hayley convinced Roy to let his mother move in. Sylvia was later shocked when she discovered Hayley was a transsexual, but Roy told his mother she would have to accept Hayley or move out, which made Sylvia grudgingly put it all behind her. Roy was still not convinced having his mother around was a good idea as it brought up painful memories, but Sylvia told him that despite the difficulty in bringing him up, she was proud of him for managing to set up his own business and find a wife all on his own.

Sylvia last appeared in August 2013 when she criticised Mary Taylor about clockwise tours of cathedrals, and gave her some good advice, that she needs her head read. Sylvia ended up leaving Weatherfield suddenly to stay with her sister Jean in August 2013 after Hayley was diagnosed with cancer, much to Roy's disappointment, especially as she just left a note.

Post-2013[]

After Hayley had passed away in January 2014 Sylvia didn't attend the funeral. Roy then disappeared claiming he was visiting his mother and aunt, but Fiz discovered a couple of weeks later that he didn't and that Sylvia was now living in Tenerife. In 2016 she was back with her sister in Hastings and Roy went to help look after her for a brief period.

Sylvia passed away in January 2019.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Stephanie Cole joined the show in April 2011, in which Sylvia was described as being similar to the late Blanche Hunt, another battleaxe in the show who was killed off in May 2010 following the real life passing of actress Maggie Jones.
  • Cole had decided to leave the show in 2013, with the character intended to depart following the death of Hayley Cropper in January 2014. She would have featured prominently during the storyline in which Hayley was dying. But following a family grievance Cole was allowed to depart the show earlier than intended, with the character making her final appearance in August 2013
  • Stephanie Cole quit the show in August 2013 after a family grievance. She was originally going to stay on longer and be involved in the storyline regarding Hayley Cropper's death. Her character was last seen in the cafe telling Mary Taylor that she needs her head read regarding clockwise tours of cathedrals. Because of the sudden departure the character never received a proper exit, and a note was left to Roy saying that Sylvia had gone to see her sister in Hastings, and she was only present for the start of Hayley's cancer diagnosis. Cole confirmed six months later in February 2014 that she didn't intend to return. The character would still be mentioned until she was killed off-screen in January 2019.
